Williams Metal Fabrications was engaged to complete specialist welding on the main cutterheads of three new tunnel boring machines (TBMs) – the largest pieces of construction equipment ever used in the state. This work was part of South Australia’s largest infrastructure project, creating 78km of non-stop, traffic light-free motorway between Gawler and Old Noarlunga and shaping South Australia’s transport network for decades to come.
Each TBM was around 100 metres long and 15 metres in diameter, and to meet the project’s demanding fabrication schedule, we added 13 extra team members who worked on rotating shifts.
