Williams Metal Fabrications was engaged by Coiltek to modify two existing glue presses at its Salisbury South facility to support a new automated cobot cell. The project involved retrofitting the existing machinery to accept larger jig assemblies used in manufacturing metal detector components – a specialty for Coiltek, who produce premium aftermarket metal detector coils and accessories.
Scope of work
To accommodate the new jig format, WMF completed:
- Fixture replacement: Removed four existing octagonal fixtures and fabricated four custom replacement fixtures.
- Precision alignment: Positioned and mounted the new fixtures to suit the larger jigs and ensure accurate, repeatable positioning.
- Guide and frame fabrication: Fabricated SHS support sub-framing with integrated hinges and laser-cut guide plates.
- Surface finishing: Edge rolled and deburred all plate entry points for safe, smooth handling.
The modified presses also needed to be level and structurally strong enough to withstand repeated pressing loads.
Outcome
Modifying the existing presses provided Coiltek with a practical and cost-effective solution, allowing the equipment to accommodate the larger jig format required for its new cobot cell. The new setup accommodates multiple coils in each jig and interchangeable base plates, supporting a more streamlined and repeatable production process.
